Guth & Tuairim, Márta 1982

Harrogate in Yorkshire is cert~nly not the most exciting venue to stage the 27 Eurovision Contest, 11 and the Irish entry for 1 82 "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow", composed by Galway born Sally Keating and performed by the Duskey's is not our strongest or most original choice for this fading contest. The song is like numerous other past Euro songs, rather dated melody, and rather poor lyrics. This was the composer's first major competition and the Duskeys' second appearance in the National Song Contest. This year 19 countries will compete in the Eurovision and Ireland has been placed second from last in order of appearance. Let's hope that the song will not end up in the same position after the jury have voted. Uith so many super composers and groups around, I ask, can this song be classed as our best composition ? I feel that the time has come for Ireland to join both France and Italy and withdraw from the Eurovision. The Pltsent Euro format i s an insult to our performers, and our composers. · The International Hit For the past three or four years that folk ballad ~A Bunch of Thyme" featuring the duo Foster and Allen has been in out of the charts on an annual basjs . Now to the surprise of the international music s cene t he song has stormed into the British charts for the duo. The two - Mick and Tony have spent in excess of £10,000 re-recording and promoting this ballad and at last they are ~ 11 ·.rewarded . A good song 1 but I do wish the boys would change their stage appearance, they look like two leprechauns instead oe two good entertainers. Li fe on the Road 1 Li f e on the r oad i n s~biz has little or no glamour about it. Some weeks back Feardorcha 0 1 Colla, the Editor, and myself set out on a six date Irish and British tour with the Seamus Me Gee Sound. In a periOd of six days we covered in excess of 5,000 miles visiting Galway, Claremorris, Dublin, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and back to base. We received a tremendous welcome at each venue ( more in the next s pecial issue of Guth 7 Tuairim ). We had late ni ghts after equipment, etc was packed, and very little sleep during the tour. Behind the bright lights there is certainly hard work, long hours and litt le gl amour behind the scene~ on the one-nights curcuit. I think I will stick to the typewriter myself. As for the editor, he found 'The Game ' as he called it very much in his favour. Pity he can't sing ~ PQ;pn l a rit;y Poll T o,ppers. Without doubt U 2 certainly emer ged as the poll toppers i n t he Hot Press Annual Foil . The group wer e voted number one act, Bono top vocalist, the Edge best instrument alist , while their al'l::lum 1 October' was rat ed as top LP by the readers. Their single 1 Gloria 1 was voted second pl ace. Good news indeed for this much travelled group of musi cians.
