Thewe~ther DUngiQ~ 5 The recent blanket of snot~ which covered the district , played havoc. I know that thez:e are those who would attempt to correct me and say that it is not the snow which creates the problems but the freezing conditions - which turns the snow into ice. Be that as it may but I am assured by some of the most senior citizens that never before have they witnessed >reather so severe. I have unconfirmed reports of a number of incidents and among those confirmed are the following: Running 11 pipe 11 water has frozen in a number of houses and as a result people had to settle for coffee or milk. I know of at least two people, like myself, who rely totally on the old hot water bottle and who have had to use hot milk and in some cases it is understood that lemonade has been used. On the telephone to a lady tris morning she described the. situation as 11 desperate 11 and added that if water didn't pass very soon she'd hate to think of the consequences. From Inishare comes a report that milk has turned solid. Also, a friend of mi ne complained that he could no longer enjoy his pipe. This, I could~'t understand, but he explained that he only smOked in the open air and to get the best enjoyment out of it he liked to 11 spit 11 qu~etly. Appar, ntly the present conditions cause the sp1t to freeze. ~ After school every day I take a .walk through the Cope and as I do I find it hard to resist having ( or should I say taking) a peep at this man. The poor fellow - he's tired and weary and to me the reason seems quite clear. Each day he greets hundreds of kids and like the priest in the\ confessional he has some advice for everyone. I really envy 'the kids of today because they are afforded this great opportunity of meeting Santa in person. When I was a wee girl the only time I saw Santa vas in my dreams and I remember how I used to wake uo and cry my eyes out on discovering that Santa was no longer at my bedside. I remember my younger sister . having a similar experience. Like myself she is a big girl now and knows that dreams don't always come true. However Santa never let me doun, I mean he never dis– appointed me, becuase I did everything he asked me inclu~ing abstaining from 11 bad 11 words. And Fjpelly I heard a good joke the other day and I think it's wor th relating before it gets stale. A Government Minister from the West arrived late for an official appointment in the Rosses anu he explained that icy conditions were totally responsible for his delay. ( Yes, I know that's not funny. But hold it, listen, wait for it!) A Clerical guest asked, "why didn't you take a ·flight from Knock?" to which the Minister replied, 11 I 1 l)l glad you mentioned that because in fact, due to a 11 clerical 11 error tha.t was not possible. (It's good,I think myself it's the way I write them.) · Should you find difficulty in reading parts of the above I would ask you to please appreciate that it's the first time in my life I've ever attempted to write with Loch An luir Ta an fon againn fa dheireadh. Anoia da mbeadh solus ann•••••• Card playing 11 25 11 has taken on a new lease of life in Loch an Iuir. The interest in card playing had deminish– ed somewhat but this Winter has c: anged all that. 16 players and more have been play.1g in a local house every night a~ many have secured their Christmas turkeys. It is n0t entirely confined to Loch an Iuir as many out– siders also come along to "chance their luck". The P~ workers have carried out alterations to the telephone poles and cables at the cross-roads to enable Donegal Co. Co. to carry out road-widening operations. The E.S.B. poles however are still an obstruction. Are the Mummers a thing of the past? In years gone by they· added a colourfUl drama to the festive season and many looked forward to a visit from t~ mummers. Those great characters Jack Straw, Turkey Champion, Beelzebub and Dr. Black are now only a memory and more's the pity. It was amusing the cure Dr. Black had for bringing Turkey Champion back to life - "Hens-Pens, peesy-weesy, midges eyes and bumbee's bacon, the fat of the griddle, the fat of the thongs, two duck eggs nine yards long put that to his nose as far as it goes. If that doe~n't cure him the Devil in hell wouldn't cure him- rise up dead man and fight again". Good cure was it not? Did you hear about the Loch an Iuir man who sat up all– night 'till morning wondering where the sun went at night. Suddenly,· it dawned on him! . .. , ~ "An Bacach 11 • Pub Q.uiz 1.
