Food, clothing, and most of the necessities of life were home-produced. Flour for bread making was obtained from the rye or wheat grown by each household. Oats or corn provided oat bread or brachan (otherwise known as 11 stirabout 11 or porridge). One of the stable meals was bruitin ( 11 poundies" in Tyrone and 11 champit tatties" in Scotland. To the English– mashed potatoe). Coastline potatoes were particularly nourishing and probably contributed to longevity because they were ~ertiliaed with seaweed or wrack, which with its iodine content was likely to ensure a healthy blood stream. All other seafoods were used extensively along the coast. Enough flax (or lint) was ~rown by each family to make their own (unbleached) bedsheets . In recent years such sheets were still t o be seen in a home in Rosbeg. From their own sheep, each f amily once Prop. Eugene Greene REJ§§E§ cJEJJNERJ POOR POOR PERFORMANCE: I was far from impressed with Dana's nerformance in Falcarrach some weeks back. It was ~tated that she charged £3,000 for this concert that lasted well under two hours. I feel that both brothers John and Gerald will always be known as Dana 1 s brothers, and their vocal talents are very limited. Dana herself was disappointed with the small turn-oat, and her sta'ge show badly needs to be revamped. I feel the Eurovision wiru1er of a decade ago, is a much over-rated artist, with a very dull and boring show. I felt sorry for the promoters they deserved better public support, and a better pro~ramme from The Brown's (the singer and her brothers). Bur IRISH SING IRISH: Well after the publicity of an Irish composed' arranged, produced and recorded hit with 'What's Another Year' singer Johnny Logan is .back on the recording market with a British composed, arranged, produced and recorded follow-up single. The single is entitle 'God Givin Love' and on the flip aide a number called 'Sweet Lady'. Poor composer Shay Healy must be very disappointed, with the way dear old Johnny has re-paid him for his instant success. CELTIC ROCKERS: Some months back Horslips performed 'Shaking All Over' at a concert in California. The number proved to be so popular that they have issued it as their new single, and also on their new album 'The Belfast Gigs'. This album was recorded live in Belfast last May, and will be. issued in America in mid-September. Horslips are off to the States next month to promote the album on a coast-to-coast tour. COHGRATULATIQNS: Warwick Records present singer Mary 0 1 Hara with a 'Platinum Disc' for sales in ~ IJl Q) .0 excess of 300,000 copies of her album 'Tranquillity'. Mary retur~ home from England for a concert in Sligo. Jl Outlet records are to present a Silver Disc for the ~ single 'Mary from Dungloe'. The single was recorded in 1968, and the artists Emmet-Spiceland have long since disbanded. ANOTHER CEANNAIRE: After two years as Ceannaire of Radio na Gaeltachta Brian Mac Aonghusa has rejoined RTE. Brian will be in charge of RTE 1 s bid to gain control of the new Nationwide Community Radio. If successful Brian would have . the North-West Region Community Radio on the air within two years. We wish him well, and wonder who will be the new boss of Radio na Gaeltachta. Like the Scottish highlanders a family killed a sheep for a fe stive occasion such as a wedding. People produced their own footwear from animal hides. Part of the tanning process involved steeping a cow hide for a certain length of time in bogwater. Vegetable dyes were Apart from vegetable dyes other plants and herbs were in everyday use. Nettles and dandelions wer~ boiled and added to the potato - and - meal diet of fowl. Nettles were thought to be particularly good for turkeyst The herb bogbean was boiled for treatment of the common cold. Children sucked 11 surr ocks 11 for the sweetness of the said plant. Carageen Moss coll ected from the sea shore was boiled to make a pleasant dessert or milk pudding . Bee-keeping was also a widespread activity i n days gone by in the North-West. In Summer cattle were driven to hill-top grazing where members of the family also spent the summer months. This is a possible explanation for the finding of tubs of butter occasionally in bogs. In those days the people were far more active than the T.V. generation of today and with the far more nutritious food many outlived the "alotted span" by used to dye wool in various colours the best known of which was known as 11 crotal" or "crotta".
