HEI!TAL HEALTH AS$0CIAl'ION OF IRELAND PROJECTS 5 As part of their work for the Internati onal Year of the Disabled, the Hental Health Association of Ireland have launched a special project which they hope will encour age and foster a deeper understanding of the problems of peopl e who are mentally ill, The proj ect is divi ded into t wo sectionry~ one aimed at s chools and t he other at the community at large , This 0 project i s being pr omoted by t he 30 branches of ~~~I throughout the country, and in this county by branches i n M Falcarrach, Letterkenny and Bundoran. The culmination of the year's activities will be l·iental Healt h Week from iiJ October 13th to 23rd, when, wi th a week of special events, the results of the pr oject s will be made known and ~ awards made t o the entrants of the most creative and interesting. ~ The schools' project consists of an Action Project, where students are encour aged t o help patients i n hospi tals • or hostel residents , This i nvolves documenting information on befriending schemes , improving physical conditions , 0 s ocial sessions and a survey of communi ty involvement. ~ Ent ries in the schools' section are open to individuals or groups within s econd-level schools and there are ~ Junior and Senior categories. Entries must be in by September 25th. Also for schools is t he Discovery Project, ~ the aim of which is to provide insights into attitudes and emotions which might be considered important in ~ mental health, This project would take the form of written accounts, audio visual, photography, art work, or 3 anything suitable for display, The project would investigate the causes of stress and methods of prevention, 2 POSTERS ~ A schools ; poster competition is also being run and the theme is "Helping the Nentally Ill", Colour posters are ori preferred and they should be on 18 ins,· x 14 ins, eheets, Separately attached to each entry should be a slogan ~ oif' a ·maximum of ten Hords on the same theme as the poster, The closing date for entries is September 18th. ~ The final project in the _schools' project is the public speaking competition for senior classes only, wi th teams ~ comprising of thre~ members, Each team member will be permitted to speak for a maxinrum of seven mi nutes on a topi c of his/her choice from a list supplied by the nearest Mental Health Association. The marks wlll be allocated in the following manner: Material JO; Research 25; Preparation and Presentation 15; Delivery 10; Rapport with audience 10; General impression 10. There are five section in the Community Projects, These include an Action Proj ect with patients along the same lines as the schools' Action Project, a photography competition, short story writing, playlet writing and drama writing, · The photography competition has the theme of "Perspective Mental Illness/Mental Health in our Community." There are categories for black and white and colour prints and prints must be a minimum of 10 ins. x l S ins. and a maximum of 20 ins, x 16 ins, Photographs should be original and unmounted and the competition is open to amateur photographers only, A maximum of three entries for each class will be accepted from each entrant , The closing date is 26th June, SHORT STORIES In the short story writing competition, entries are open to all writers over 18 years of January 1981. Stories may be submitted i nGaeilge or in English, and should not be longer than 6,000 words. Each entry should be ' typewritten on one side only of plain white A4 paper, using at least double spacing and generous margins. Only original and previously unpublished stories will be eligible and must be the work of the entrant and the closing date for receipt of entries is July 17th, Hriters must submit work in their own names, The award-winning entrants agree to have their work published in book-form by the ~ffiAI. The awards are inclusive of royalties on the sales of the first edition of the collection, In the playlet writing section, the theme, is the cause of stress in society, The piece should consist of a maximum of 2,000 words or approximately ten minutes duration, Entries should be typewritten on one side only of plain white A4 ~aper and the competition is open to all wri ters and the closing date for entries is June JOth, The drama writing section is for full-length plays and if in the opinion of the judges an adequate standard has been reache4, the winning play will be acted out by a well-known amateur drama group and staged in the John Player Theatre on Thursday, November 26th, and Friday, November 27th, Entries may be submitted i nGaeilge or in English, and must be original and previously unpubli shed.
