Guth & Tuairim, Nollaig 1980

Lit reacha Gort a 1 Choirce, Nollaig •so. A Chara, Do we all remember the da7s when we had Angie and Anna to read the news! Not to mention Coronation St. fresh from the vine instead of the 1 78 vintage. The reception from our local transmitter vas seldom 100%. One used to look at the daily rag to survey what was on the box that night, then the big moment - switch-on time - fUnny, the picture was fine last night~? So we twiddle nobs and aerials; no good, then we look u~ to the great loo on the hill to see the antenna laying over swinging in the breeze. But not to worry - the said antenna was repaired like greased lightning (well within a month aeyvay1) This happened a fe~ times before_the lads found the right piece of string to hold the beast to heel. . But since September or thereabouts, not a spark; someone had wrecked the equipment, we know not who~ So tlae lads called a meeting of all us fools who paid our £50 and a few who didn't. It lasted more than two hours and was nothing more than a slanging match. Now come on lads get your fingers o~t, Angie finishes in January, switch it back on or .give our diamonds back. We may even give a little more if the .wolf is at the door. It has cos-t us more than Charlie is asking for the annual colour licence. A Chara, Merry Christmas!! Yours very peeved, liThe Gazerll. 8;i2Jiso:- . Although I am not a permanent resident of the area I always held the people of Gaoth Dobhair in great esteem. It was therefore with great disappointment that I found myself sitting in an almost empty Amharclann recently, where the Internationally famous Gaoth Dobhair family group_Clannad were performing. Their concert was being televised for future bro~cast on German television. It's strange to thibk that in Germany Clannad are recognised as being one of the top folk/traditional groups, yet here at home their talents are largely ignored. Another example of the apathy shown by Gaoth Dobhair people in relation to the Amharclann was the lack of support for the recent performances by the Aisteoir! of 'Laomluisne Fomhair~ , Mise le meas, Michael James Roarty, Glasgow ~dor_e_. __ COMMUNITY WORKSHOP OPENS IN JANUARY The new 'Community Workshop' set up by the North Western Health Board on the Gweedore Industrial Estate, for the physically and Mentally Handicapped will open on Monday 5th of January next. The centre will provide training for open employment and sheltered employment for handicapped persons who find it difficult to gain any form of employment. The training skills which will be available in the Gweedore 'Workshop' includes ' Carpentry, Electronics Assembly, and Sewing. As the Rehabilitation programme develops it is envisaged that new areas of training will be developed. Another important skill offered in the Workshop is 'Social Skills Training'. When the Centre open its doors at least fitteen persons will attend and its hoped to add another three or four on a monthl7 basis, and within a year it will train and employ at least fitty-five persons. At the moment the Health Board are compiling a register of the handicapped suitable ror Vocational Training Rehabilitation. The manager of this 'Workshop' will be Mr. John Mcl'adden. Without doubt the project offers a litt.le hope to the ~ handicapped persona resident in the Gaeltacht Region, and one hopes that it will open many closed doors to the handicapped co1111111Ulit7 who hue .been so bedl7 isolated .troa the reat of societT. le DoDal I! _ O'_.Bor~tl• Why vu ns'. in a bad mood last week? Foireann Peile Ghaoth Dobhair ins an bhliain 1949. Accident. Black spot This month brings us to the Rosses again. We come out of Anagaire heading for Crolly; approximately f mile from Anagaire we pass the turn known locally as 'Crois-bhealach Rann na Feirste'. Immediately afterwards we come to a dangerous left-hander banked the wrong way. This bend just above Doyle 1 s is highly deceptive. The short-term solution is to take off the inside edge of the road and build up the camber. The long-term solution is to completely re-develop the whole road from Anagaire to Crolly. All corners need to be eased and the road needs widening to prevent wide vehicles to pass each other safely. Now, pedestrians - where are those reflective arm-bands? You are being far more dangerous than any fast driver if you are walking the road at night without one. I say this in a dictatorial manner! I am only trying to get you to help yourselves to avoid being struck by a car. May you all drive carefully and walk carefully so that it will be a Happy Christmas and New Year for each and every one of us and also throughout 1981. liThe Wheel".
