The Miracle Guns n Roses Paul McCartney Cyndi Lauper Queen The Country Clones Almost weekly we have another new country singer launched on a vastly over-crowded country market, with a publicity tag "Ireland's new Daniel O'Donnell". Names from John Hogan to Joe Murray are all jumping on the Daniel bandwagon. Even established names such as sandy Kelly is seeking publicity with her "Tribute to Patsy Cline". Faded names such as Larry Cunningham and Jim Tobin were "Ireland's answer to Jim Reeves", and names from Brendan Bowyer to Frank Chisum became the Elvis Presley clones. Today record buyers or dancers do not want poor cover versions of Daniel. Jim Reeves, Patsy Cline, Elvis etc., theywant real original talent. With the lack of fresh original ideas, country · music remains in the doldrums, and the disco boom remains the number one in dancing entertainment. Celebration Time at Leo's !each Tabhaime Leo" in Meenaleck will celebrate its 2lstanniversarywith a week-long programme of the bets in pop, rock, country and folk from July 14th. The venue was established by musician Leo Brennan, when he dis– banded his famed Slieve Foy Showband in the late 60s, and it was the venue where names such as Clannad, Enya. Daniel O'Donnell, first appeared in public. The walls of !each Tabhaime Leo" are littered with Silver, Gold and Platinum accolades awarded to both Clannad and Enya. Over the past two decades television and radio crews from Ireland, U.K. and Europe have visited the venue and top entertainers such as U2 members enjoyed a night or two there. During the 21st anniversary celebration week. leading names will be in action, including the re-union ofLeo's famed Slieve Foy for a trip down memory lane. We wish Leo and company all the very best for the next 21 years ahead. What a Fiasco They say never share the publicity spot– light with children, animals, or indeed politicians. And pop band Royal Flush will confirm this, after they invited An Taoiseach Charles J. Haughey to attend the launching of their single in Irish "Is Leatsa r. An Taoiseach got the media attention, while Royal Flush and the composer rock journalist Ruaidhri O'Baille got little or no press coverage. Even Radio na Gaeltachta have failed to give this pop offering much air-play on their programmes. So Royal Flush are not flushed with success after "Is Leatsa r' a pop fiasco. The Same Dull Show Repeated Oh Iwish that festival committees could sit down, and organise something dif– ferent for their annual summer festi– vals. A look at any programmes will reveal, yes a Bonny Baby Contest, Mr. and Mrs. Contest, Glamourous Grand Ma and Grand Da events, Donkey Derby, Treasure Hunt. and that boring Grand Parade competition, with all the bands appearing at each festival playing the same dreadful tunes. And the high– light of the festivals seems to be another "Beauty Contest". with the girls looking as bored as the audience at each event. Even the tourists now regard such "festivals" as just an excuse for ex– tended pub hours, and the entertainers on stage are well over their sell-by date. News ideas are long, long overdue. By the way, the Burtonport Festival starts on the 22nd, and Mary from Dungloe on the 29th. Sing Along on Disc Well after a chart trip for Clannad and Enya. we have a host of new recordings from local talent. -Dolphin Records re– issue two albums from John Kerr, "Three Leaved Shamrock & Other Irish Hit Songs", and "John Kerr Sings Coun– try and Irish". Altan featuring Mairead and Frankie have called their album "Horse With a Heart", and pop wise "have a God Time with the Playboys" is enjoying good air-plays in Scotland for the Lifford popsters. 2FM have included Pluto's "Irresistible" on their playlist, and a peace song from Margo entitled "A NewTomorrow", on cassette an EP "My Birthplace Donegal" from Downings country singer Donal McDevitt. In the studio were the Malfunctions, and Daniel, but still no word of a new song from country star Seamus McGee. The Fun Chart 1. Help Charlie J. Haughey 2.
