••• I Mary From Dungloe Festival Celebrates its 15th Season. It's unlikely that the unknown composer of the tender ballad 'Mary from Dungloe' or the recording artists Emmett- Spiceland foresaw the tourist boom t~at their song would bring to the picturesque town of lJungloe. When the ballad made the coveted number one spot in the Radio Telefis Eireann recording charts in 1968, the local Development Association in Dungloe decided that they would base their festival on a beauty competition called the "Mary from Dungloe". From a small beginning this festival has grown to become a major international event, supported by Donegal/Leitrillv'Sligo Tourism, Guinness Group Sales, P.J. Carrolls, etc. Mary's are selected in towns and cities in America, Britain, parts of Europe and throughout Ireland. In all, twenty two girls will come to Dungloe to compete for the coveted 'Mary from Dunglce Crown this year and take part in the festival programme which will be held from Sunday 25th of July and run till Monday 2nd of August. For the third year the gala show will be hosted by Radio 2, UTV, and BBC TV presenter Paul Clarke who feels that this contest has a character all of its own and doesn't resemble any other major beauty competition. 6 The star from Donegal.
