What was once a rural community plagued by immigration and engaged in subsistance farming is now a modern, industrialised, urbanised one. The immigrant ship now brings people back. Back to factories which have been lured _ to the North ~est by the state-sponsored Gaeltarra Eireann (now Udaras na Gaidtachta). Some people question the wisdom of building factories in the Gaeltacht, but whatever the problems posed for the language there is no doubt that this 'new' way of life brings new problems which are often overlooked. These are social problems - a by-product of industrialisation. · There is a committee, comprised of members from the various factories in the area whose purpose it is to cater for the social needs of the workers. At the moment however relations between this committee· and G~ltarra are somewhat strained.
