Landlords And Their Agents Iam writing this short article on the second day of April and in County Donegal one can scarcely think of this date without recalling that it was the one on which the heroes of Fanad sent Lord Leitrim, the Tyrant, to his well-deserved doom. The trusted and well tried Public Health Of Ireland Act became law on April the first, 1878 and the first Public Health Nuisance to be abated was the infamous Earl. The event is enshrined for posterity in a very famous song, the text of which was sent to me by the late Bert Lloyd of London, the Lord have mercy on his noble soul. Bert was regarded as the best authority on English folk-song until his lamented death some four years ago. His mantle would now appear to have fallen on the Manchester Angel, Ewan Macola. Bert took a lively interest in the struggle of the working classes both in his own country and in Ireland and when the wee bit of bother broke out in the Six Counties sent me the Lord Leitrim masterpiece. It was on April Fools' Day this monster left his den With his gang of bums and bailiffs on the bor– ders of Lough Lenn And going down the road boys, he let an awful bawl Saying today we'll tumble cabins down below in Donegal, etc. However this masterpiece is not appreci– ated in certain circles in this little Isle of Green. I was quite recently taken to task for singing it by an intellectual 'in that city of dastards and bel– lowing slaves' to quote John Mitchell called Du– blin or Maggie Thatcher's other capital. Wherever you meet these masked West– Brits just look up their family tree. Invariably you will find that a father or a grand-father 'took the Saxon shilling' and did their dirty killing some– where on the Coast of Corramandel or in some part of the British Dominions on which, we were assured when I attended school in the Six Coun– ties, the sun never set. Thank God I have lived to see many a sunset and since to know that the British Banner has been torn down and trampled in the bloody dust of lands that have cast off the so-called White Man's Burden which was rightly considered to be a Black Man's Yoke. Or maybe you'll find the person who rushes to the defence of the landlords, had a grand-father of a grand-uncle in the R.l.C. who, for so long in this country were the ears of the Grand Qui' Dame, Britania. But Leitrim was not the only tyrannical landlord in Tir Chonaill. There was also a particu– larlycruel, avaricious creature by the name of 01- phert who resided at Ballyconnell, Falcarragh and bled the proud though poor tenants of his Gweedore estate almost to the last drop. And then, by a miracle of God, a deliverer was sent them in the form and person of the mighty Father James McFadden from Claddan, Carrigart. The storyof Olphert's defeat must wait until the next issue.
