Guth & Tuairim, Meán Fómhair 1981

couldn't take ~ore of it. Thetdrinking man (and woman , houndeq by successive governments ~ just had enough (not drink) and so the 'Movement' was born. Known as the "Friends of the Publican", this underground secret society is feared in government circles to have a membership of 3 million in the Republic alone. It's founder member Alan O'CQ].lick, known to his friends as Al and who is also chief executive with Poteen (Ireland) Ltd, an I.D.A. and Udaras backed industry admitted to me that he founded the "Union" as he called it out of frustration at b~ing barred from so many pubs. He says he tried to get it registered as the Action Association but due to some confusion with a motoring body and another group who wished remain anonymous ' he dropped the idPa. The Taoiseach, speaking~n the news at one-thirty said, "this dwinking (hie) will have to slop". Political experts are still trying to analyse that statement. The Leader of the Opposition was contacted in the public bar in Lenister House for his comments but he was busy. addressing the Monday club and only smiled at reporters and said, "haw haw, hee hee 11 • In another development Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa secretly flev into Ireland and addressed a mass meeting in St. Fatrick 1 s Cathedral of the people's union.· He said, 11 We are all friends. Now drink Polish Vodka and support our workers 11 • But a drunk in the ·audience, obviously a keen Paddy man shouted "We are PQles apart". The government in a move to combat the growing menace have set up a Combat Drink Committee (or c.n.c. for short) but due to cutbacks in public spending this new Department is at the moment only staffed b.y one man. Unfortunately this individual last worked for c.r.E. and is on strike looking for (a) more beer-money (b) to be able to join the "Union". He is mounting a one man picket inside a Dublin pub. The Minister for Moderation in a pioneering move has decided to convert all motor vehicles to Alcholic Fuel to reduce our deperidance on er •••• oil. This move however, is seen by "Al" 0 1 Collick as a double blow which would hit the hard-pressed motorist and the honest drinking man once again. He predicted that there would be widespread syphoning and said the gardai just wouldn't have enough Breathalisers. Meanwhile in an effort to cut back on the beer mountain, the E.E.C. is to subsidise a new scheme whereby publicans will puur a pint or two over their patrons at closing time to sober them up. This quaint custom incidentally is thought to have originated in the little village of Annagry in West D9negal. Pub!icans and the public agree it's a Terrific idea. "Basil 0 1 Fawlty". Sean 0 Domhnaill PUB SPY Ieo's We recently visited Leo's Tavern in M!n Na Leice where this year for the first time in about 20 years the famous Jack's Fair was revived. The decor and the comfort in seating is nothing to rave about but the homely, friendly·atmosphere certainly is. We enjoyed a good pint of beer and a 'half one' served b,y the man himself and later he took to the stage to serve up one of the beat nights entertainment we've enjoyed for some time. We cannot comment on prices or compare them at this stage because of recent increases. Pub Grub A very good selection, where you can buy anything from a bunburger to Lunch at reasonable prices. Prices for drink and food are very clearly dis– played. Toilets The toilets were a real disappointment and are badly in need of a face lift. It's a pity because other– wise we were very impressed with Leo' :·, The gantry is very well stocked and there 1 s always a warm welcome at the door from the Landlord himself. For a good night's entertainment I would recommend a visit to Leo's to anyone but hopefully there will soon be an improvement in the toilets.
