The Leader, Samhain 1988

The Return oi Danny Boy It's chartsville again for 27 year old Daniel O'Donnell, as his new album "From the Heart" issued by Telstar Records zooms to the top of the British country music charts. Daniel was awarded a Gold Disc for advance British sales of the album. Now we have the debut video from the country hero and it's called "Live at the Ulster Hall", another best seller for the singer, and a must for his numerous fans to enjoy. Rattle and Rum First it was "Rattle and Hum" the album, then we had the movie, and now we have the book. "Rattle and Hum" was compiled by wri– ters Peter Williams and Steve Turner. Pub– lished by Pyramid Books, it looks back at the making of this "concert" style film in America during the Joshua Tree Tour, well illustrated and more enjoyable to read than Eamon Dunphy's rather boring "The Unforgettable Fire - The story of U2". Chris back in Concert With his chart topping album "Flying Col– ours", singer/composer Chris de Burgh is cur– rently on a major British concert tour. Later in the month, he returns to Dublin for four con– certs from the 26th till 29th of November, and then off to Belfast from the 1st till 3rd of Decem– ber. Tickets for the Dublin concerts are avail– able from the Ticket Shop, HMV, Grafton Street.Dublin 2. The Boys on Tour off on a four week tour of Denmark. Charles, Joe, Billy and Charlie have a new single "I Can Make It" just issued on the A & C label. The song is an original and a track from their cur– rent album-cassette "Have a Good Time with the Playboys". A busy schedule for the pop– sters, who deserve good media attention with the new release. Poparama Song Con– test '89 Composers in the 8 to 18 age group are invited to enter the Poporama Song Contest '89. A copy of the lyrics and a demo cassette of the song should be sent to Poparama Song Contest, Radio 2, Donnybrook, Dublin 2. Ten songs will be performed in the gala final broad– cast live by RTE 2, on February 24th next. Win– ning composer will receive an electronic keyboard. 6 Rugh Short-Changed While I was delighted to see a picture of DCR's Bobby McDaid presenting Hugh Mclean with a Gold Disc for album-cassette sales of 100,000 copies. In Ireland, if an album sells 10,000, the recording artist or group are awarded a Silver Disc, for sales of 15,000 it's a Gold Disc, and for 25,000 copies a Platinum. So Hugh, you were short changed, for sales of 100,000 an artiste is entitled to not one but four Platinum Discs, or so the chart compilers l.F.P.I say. Congrats Enya Our congratulations to our very own Enya on the international success of both her single "Orinoco Flow" and her album "Watermark". Both enjoying tremendous air-plays on both the BBC and IBA regional stations throughout the UK. Enya plans to hit the road for a series of concert dates, let's hope that she will include a date in her native county. Ufford's own pop export, The Playboys, are just back from an English tour, and in early Decem– ber they are off again, this time to Scotland on a two week tour. In February next, the four are "Too Much For The Whiteman" will be appearing in Letterkenny shortly. POP AWARDS'88 Who were your favourite hit makers of '88 ?
