Guth & Tuairim, Bealtaine 1981

Rosses, Go. Donegal. April, 1 81. A Chara, I am a male member of this society and I agree entirely with the views expressed by "Refined Old Lady" in a recent edition on the subject of Ladies Tug-o-i·lar. In my day girls were feminine (as I'.m sure the majority still are), shapely, and took good care of themselves. What's more men respected themt Now we see Ladies indulging in the men's sport of Tug-o-War and it makes me feel sad. Are these the sort of daughters we are rearing? Parents please instruct and guide your daughters. Or is that day gone also? Yours faithfUlly, E. D. Somewhere in Donegal, May' 1981. A Chara, I can't believe what I've just read in a certain towns local notes in a weekly paper - £70,000 for ~roof for~ church! It's outrageoust In a world where there is so much poverty, disablement, old people living alone, etc., it seems such a waste to spend so much money on a roof. Just think of all the worthwhile uses that money could be put to. At the moment it has come to the stage that one parish is trying to have a better church than the other. I feel God would rather see more prayers an~ less of this waste of public money. On enterine one of those modern churches I spend mos t of my time admiring the architecture, etc. , and forget about the real purpose of a church whi ch be a place of prayer and worship. In contrast in Kincasslagh, Meenaweal, Annagry, etc., plain though they may be, one can feel God is around. I feel it's time more emphasis was placed on our religion rather than on the splendour and magnificence of our churches. Give me a plain church anydayt Any comments? Yours, "Guth 7 Tuairim 11 reader. A Chara, We are a group of 15 housewives who have come together during the last few weeks to discuss the state of our economy. Yes, housewives -we are the mothers and housekeeners of this country and from now on we intend to make ~ur views known to our T.D.'s, County Councillors, etc. Most of our husbands are working (at the moment) but four are unemployed due to factory closures and the dole money they are getting is totally unsatisfactory. Many of our members are F.F., F.G., and S.F.W.P. but we can assure you that we will not be conned by promises and propaganda during the coming election like we heard at the recent by-election. Our roads are the worst in the country, our factories are closing down, we have no signposts to direct our tourists and food prices are rocketing. It is time for housewives to unite and demand a bet~er deal, both for ourselves (and God knows our husbands pay enough taxes) and for our families who at .present have few prospects. We now have to cast aside our fathers' and mothers' politics and judge for ourselves who will give us the best perfo~ance in Government. I'm sure farmers, fishermen, fact'ory workers, unemployed and espec– ially the youth will agree. Anyone interested in showing our strength please get in touch with this paper.
