Guth & Tuairim, Samhain 1980

~~ .... ~'!!!2!:!!. .. ~ Never before was there so much attention focused on Donegal as during the recent by-election campaign. The big cars (and helicopters) came roaring dO'Wil from Dublin (and from most other parts of the country) Packed.with election promises and goodies. Yes, they admitted, Donegal ~ been forgotten, but now everything would be put right. Airports, factories, jobs, roads, grants - the most surprising thing vas that nobody offered £5 per vote. It would have been nearly ,as cheap tor them in fact because the parties spent a staggering £200,000 + trying to "buy" us. We think it vas a sick exercise, a shocking waste of money (ours1), which would have been much better spent on building proper roads. They had a cheek coming here in the first place considering the neglect with which they have treated this county. ~ "Chrl;t~s--comes but once a year, but when it comes 2 it comes with cheer", is a line from an article i? · elsewhere in thi s paper. But for some families 14 . · the above certainly vent be true this Christmas. The little children especially will suffer, because they wont have nice toys to play with. Fr. Frankie Herron is from this area, but is working in the Rathmines/Rathgar area of Dublin. He tells me that there will be many such children in his parish. That's why "Gutb 7 Tuairim 11 is starting a Toys Appeal! We will be leaving boxes in various shops in the 3 parishes so if there are toys in your home that are not wanted we would be glad to get them. Just wrap them, with your name and address and leave them-in one of the boxes. We will forward them to Fr. Frankie who'll make sure that at least some or·the poor children in his parish will have a happy, cheery Christmas . But we'll never learn1 Nov that the dust has settled, Donegal will once again be a forgotten word in their dictionary which contains familiar words like 'state cars', 'jobs for the boys', 'all expenses paid' and tax-free salaries 1 • We can only .hope that the successful candidate will put thevelfare of our people before the political 'good life'. Coinneoidh muid suil ghear air1 · "An t-Eagarthoir" • finaga1re Our new T.D. Clement Coughlan got a very enthusiastic reception on visiting the parish on a recent Sunday afternoon. However, following Peter's gesture of . goodwill the dumbfounded cavalcade following the T.D. vent astray in Rann na Feirste. We wish Clement the best of luck, and also thank the supporters of all concerned for removing their posters so soon after the election. A very enjoyable pub-quiz vas organised by Naomh Muire football club recently, taking place in Jack's Lounge. feleotron emerged winners defeating the Bcnnar 1 s Dar boys in an exciting Final and I.F.C Searcaigh accepted the ~up on their behalf frcm Colre ~~c Giolla Easbuic,Along with Joe the other members of the winning team were Mr. Jimmy Boyle, Mr. Art Wilson and Mr. John A. Barrow from the Station House, Crolly. The quiz game seems to be a growing sourse of entertainment with some very slick question-masters adding the professional touch. Halloween has passed - but not without the yoUnger people of the parish letting us know, having had as many as six groups of mummers calling to our homes nlghtly. Biddie EogQain just back from the U.S.A., where she voted Carter out of the White House, is finding the dollars handy for the machines. I guess the dollars are useful with the falling value of the Punt. ----·-•::_?"_. ~/ BIRTHS Congratulations to the following couples on their nev arrival: Meabha agus Lucio Leonardi, An Bunbeag (gasur) Mairead agus Fatrick Sharkey, Anagaire (girseach) Caitlfn agus Packie HcGinley t Doire Beaga (girseaoh) Nuala agus Denis Hanlon, An Ghloohan Liath (Twins ·- gasuir!)
