EA&ARAbT Recently we heard the story of the British Soldier shot dead at point blank range in Derry while drinking with his wife end her family in a .local pub. He had been given compassionate leave from the army to 2 visit his wife who had a miscarriage. Hooded gunmen burst in and ended his life at 19. Just another statistic to add to the growing number of tragedies brought by the troubles. The men of violence must be happy~ They have furthered the cause of Irish unity? No - when iU.ture generations look back on this dark period of our history the gunmen will not be remembered like we remember Pearse and Connolly. ~ ~ R?.ther will they be remembered as murdering thugs ~..:. who delayed the unification of our country. a>_ F "An t-Eagarth~ir" • : .§ Rann na eirste , 'g '~uireadh fearadh na faHte roimhe an Chairdinealach !!P :J f Fiach nuair a thug se cuairt ar an bhaile ·le • .;:! ~ gairid. Dun Luiche DUNGLOE The town is in a festive mood once again as the 11 Mary's" converge on the town and the Internationally famous festival gets into swing. Our thanks must go to this years committee for tbeir great effort in presenting such a hectic and varied programme of events - at sucn very short notice. ~ the time you read this things will be well under way, and I sincerely hope that the weather will be kind enougn to let us enjoy events to the fUll. As the last voters went to the polls on July 11th most of us were quietly looking forward to the count which was fixed for Ostan na Rosann at midnight. Inside the hotel, rumours were flying: "It it's not Alcorm it must be Hanlon". "I feel Big Anthony could be a dark horse". "Jim the Cope's very worried looking - and he didn't even dress up for the occasion" (come to think of it he hasn 1 t dressed up for a long time). · Shortly after 12.30 there was great silence as the Returning Officer Fr. P. Kerr moved slowly in the direction of the rostrum. All eyes'were fixed on the brown envelope under the arm of the Curate and he didn't keep us in suspence - he was quick to give us the verdict. Regretably, he was unable to name the first Mayor of the Rosses, because in fact Hanlon and Alcorn had tied for the title. People looked at each other open mouthed. Would there be a re-count? M. c. Naul McCole answered that question. He announced that "the chain" would be shared by the two successful candidates - six month's each. But a rather displeased Mr. Alcorn would have none of it and after saying what he wanted to say requested that "democracy be upheld". Jim the Cope on behalf of Michael Hanlon thanked everyone - and also requested that democracy be upheld. But how could the "chain" be shared? Very soon we had the answer when David Alcorn withdrew from the Contest - which meant thit Michael Hanlon was now Mayor of the Rosses. Harmony appeared to have been restored and for the remainder of the night a good time was had by all. The following Wednesday evening more than 40 carloads of enthusiastic supporters, with a motor cycle escort a ccompanied the new Mayor on a tour of the Rosses. During this whistle-stop tour the Mayor availed of the Citizen Band P.A. System to say "Thank You". On returning to Dungloe the children's b~ was on hand to lead the Mayor who was in an open-roofed car through the main-street where hundreds turned out to offer their congratulations to the one who for so long had done so much for the community in a voluntary capacity with so little recognition. So very often were we embarassed when we were forced to tell tourists that we had no Cinema, no this and no that. But this wasn't too bad since we could always direct them tc the Tourist Office. Now, sad to say Bord *ilte has decided to deprive us of this service also. I was always of the opinion that Bord Failte saw Donegal as being an area similar in size to the Rosses with Letterkeony in the centre. I am now fully convincedt "The Kerryman". Summer-Cup ~ania has hit DUn LUiche and already the football team has won a "sevens" competition in Dunkineely and the Loch an Iuir five-a-side.
