.PAINT l T BUCK Ace ident e Black spot May I start by wishing all a very Happy New Year - with safe use of our roads botr. by car and on foot. This month brings us back to Gsoth Dobhair, to the road from Dobhar into Bunbeag via Cnoc a' Stolaire to an area known locally as Loch an Bealaigh. From the Dobhar direction, after passing Sharkey's you go over the crest of a hill where water has been 11 springing" up in the middle of the road for decades. In frost, this freezes resulting in an icy patch on a downhill st stretch approaching a right hand corner. The corner has an adverse camber, there is no protection on the left hand edge ••• result- a 6ft. drop into the bog. There have been numerous accidents on either side of this corner. I suggest (1) Drain the water by laying . pi{les and then resurface the road smoothly and properly. (2) Lower the bank on inside of corner to reduce blind· view. Haterial from this operation could then be used to build up the outside of the corner. (3) Erect protective rail along outer edge of road (similar to th those on DUn Luiche - Letterkenny road) to save people injury on landing upside down in the bog. Ideally, this whole road from Bunbeag to Dobha1· needs widening to cater for the heavy commercial traffic and Public Transport. There are many places where two large vehicles cannot pass. 1 Last Winter we enconraged pedestrians to wear their armbands when walking the roads at night. Are ~ wearing your armband this Winter? This month "Guth 7 Tuairim" will present a cheque for £5 to some pedestrian who has the good sense to be wearing ~ g g -M ~ 0 "' ~ their armband. While this would certainly cut interference wit h domestic radio and T.V. to a minimum the Government fail to point out that radi~tion at these frequencies may have seriOU8 effects on the human body. There appears to be a definite link with cataracts of the eye. Also, a range of 9 miles is thought to be adequate while test results show that in practice ranges are likely to be between 10 and 50 per cent of this di.stance. So it seems that the British Government are equally out of t·ouch with C. B. users as their Irish counterparts. b The rnternatio~al 9 Code ·c . Q) ~ Danny Minnie's We visited O'DonaiU's Pub in Anagaire during the Christmas holiday period and found it hard to believe that a Public House could be so BAD. The gantry was poorly stocked, tl"\e decor7as badly neglected and the roof leaked in more places then one. On my visit to the toilet I decided to wait until I went elsewhere as I was overcome by the stench as soon as I entered the door. The only guod comment I can make about this establishment is the friendly and effi cient way the young barman went about his work in atrocious conditions. Not a bad pint of beer either at 62p. No pub-grub served. The Management would argue that the premises is being renovated at the moment but there can be no excuse for ,letting a place that is open to the public get ~o run-down. In 1981 the paying customer deserves better. (1 ~ --------""'·-- I J..Q_ '"1R~ i"'Vvl · The television companies of these islands, of whid1 we in the North-West have the doubtfUl privilege of paying f or and/or sponging f rom, deserve to be in my opinion collectively honouxed by their cousins in the film industry. They sho·uld be awarded the Old Hat Award for doing more than required by the call. of duty for the preservation of old films. Let there be no discrimination against our native channels for they have done their bit. They show us ol~ forgotten films in Spring, older forgot t en films in Summer and older never-rememberein - in - the - first place films in Autumn, but fair dues to them, they come up with the goods at the end of the day - or rather the year. Mind you, the films they show at the end of the year are old too, but at least they are memorable old films, ones we saw at Sunday Matinee or were too young to see. It is a great feeling being able to determine some point in time as the year when the film was made and identify in some way with that time like: "My Granny was 36 when this film was made." It make s the enjoyment ot the film so complete that you believeyou are watching a good film. or course you should know better, but can be easily forgiven considering the stuff you are ·usually subjected to. Yes, I believe the boys of the Silver Screen have a lot to be thankful for! Where would they be without T.V. Stations? In the dustbin, that's where. So the least they could do is present the award of the "Old Hat" and they'll never b~> forgotten for it. It's not that they're shor t of presenters but I think King Kong would go down big presenting the award to Derek Davies of R.T.E. news on behalf of his colleagues North and South.
