Litreacha A Chara, ' Atlantis, Burtonport. I enjoy sitting around a turf fire these winter µights, singing, joking, laughing and enjoying 'the living here in Burtonport. Fa Ward, in a recent poem reckons I'd be better employed .out mining Uranium which we all know will brine wealth and prosperity. How? Well, it works like this: The uraniun comes out of the ground. Now that's merry enough. Then i':. goes to England where they make bombs with it or else use it to fuel their Atomic Power Stations. All the Atomic Power Stations on England's west coast pump waste into the Irish Sea. So all the wealth and prosperity returns to Ireland on ':.he very next tide, or turns up in the fish caught by our trawlermeno Also, all these nice big bombs aren't made "Just for fun 11 • They are made for one purpose only - Killing people. So we'll all get lots of wealth and prosperity out of the gold in them there. hills when radioactive dust from all those bombs we supplied the fuel ~or comes drifting back to them there hills. And if it ever comes to that, there won't be anybody anywhere doine anything ever again -in Co. Donegal. So leave the 11 gold 11 in them there hills. The lunatics have far more than enough of it out of the ground already. All they really do with it in the end is turn i t into Plutonium; put the Plutonium in bombs .and aim the bombs at every concentration of people the world over. .So we can all sleep peacefUlly these winter nights, singing songs around the turf fires, s ecure in the knowledge that: Somewhere up in them there hills, Somebody is digging for the gold that Kills. What about cyclists? In a recent accident in this area a cyclist received facial injuries. With adequate street-lighting however this and other accidents could have been prevented.. H It is Gleich Cheann Fhaola 1 s turn this month, and a dangerous junction we all know well - at the statue at Ardsbeg, where the Derryconnor road joins the Machaire Rabhartai main coast road on a very steep narrow downhill. The ~arning of this major road ahead ro. w~en travell~ng fro~ Derryconnor is most inadequate - a ~~ mis erable 'Geill Sli' sign which one only sees far too ~~ late. A Chara, It looks bad .for Gaelic Football in Donegal when the Kerry Team has to bring the Sam Maguire Cup into . the County to show it to the people. After all the F.A.I. Cup was brought to Donegal on merit when Finn Harps won it in 1973/74. A Chiµoa, Mise le meas, A Keadue Man. Doire Beaga, JO/l/'81. I recently came across a Donegal weekly news– paper of lC years ago (1971), and found some of its headings interestingt 'A break-through?' was a heading in the editorial, where they talked -about the situation in the North where Mr, Faulkner was Prime Minister. Other headings read: 'Bitter debate on election of ·Vice-Chairman'. (Co. CounciJ 0f course). 'Policeman all~ged cattle illegally herded across border.' 'Angler refused baliff 1 s demand for fis'hing rod 1 • "Clarify your role" C~R.A. call to Taoiseach, 'Danny McDaid's great performance 1 • 1 F.eile Ghaoth Dobhair called off' • 'Annagry Priest transferred to Fanad'. (Fr. Con Cunningham). Prominent names on the Pop page were - Margo & Country Folk, Paddy McDevitt & Northern Lights Larry .Cunningham & His Blue Boys, The Starlites, ' Evelyn & The Envoys. A Chara, Anagaire, 7/27'81. With reference to your 'Pub Spy' article on Danny Minnie's Pub, I think that your reluctant one pint rating was somewhat harsh; there are a few points I would like to make. Firstly, this premises is usually very well patronised by' the regular middle-aged week-end social drinkers of the area, the reason being .that one has not to endure the agony of watching some silly programme on colour T.V. - something that can be done at homeo Instead~ they all enjoy each others natural humour, wit and ~onversation. I have yet to hear anyone of these regulars complaint Also, anyone who is not a regular is made to feel very much at home and is automatically included in the conversation. The holiday-makers enjoy. itt There is nothing plastic about the place, everything is for real. I .can only hope that the new premises under construction can hold on to some of the character. and charm that is very much a part of the existing premises. Therefore, I think that the image presented was somewhat slanted. Why not call again al'l(~ see if what I write is true? Finally, in your 'Pub of the Year' competition I suggest you should focus a little attention on the human element - the satisfaction of the regular customer. / EARRAI Gaoth Mise le meas, T.T.
