Guth & Tuairim, Deireadh Fómhair 1980

lit reacha 4u Deireadh Fomhair, A Cwa, I would be ~o~t grateful if I could use some sp&ee in your paper to draw attention to a pr oblem concerning school t raDsport in Gaoth Dobhair , which has worsened since the openini of the new Community School at Lunniagh. 5 Great inconvenience is being caused to many pupils because of the inadequate number of buses providing transport at present. Overcrowding on ~ .p school buses is by no means a new problem in the area, but it has now reached an unacceptable level, and on ~ at least one occasion there were 104 on one of the buses taking pupils to Lunniagh and the Techt Children living as close as three miles to the school have to catch a bus as early as 8.10 a.m. These same children then have to wait aoything up to 40 minutes outside the school in the evening until their bus arrives. It is usually abomt 4.45 p.m. when they are home, despite their proximity to the school. · Who is to blame for this situation? I certainly would not lai any of the blame on the teachers and other people connected with the school who have done their.utmost in recent times to improve the service. The main culprits, in rq opinion, are the parents, although they will probably deny this accusation. They are the influential people in our community and I feel it's time that they spoke out and made it knovn to the 'Powers that be 1 in Dublin that they are not satisfied with the present state of affairs. Let's hope that things will improve in the near fUture for our long-suffering children. Mise le meu, •A Concerned Parent•. ~ A Chara, 1/10/'80, ~ "" "' 0 g 1n the last few months Tug-o-War has become a very popular sport in this area, with quite a larp following from Donegal Town to Anagaire. On Sunday 28th September a big crowd attended a tug-o-war ~ competition in Burtonport. Unfortunately, the days events were spoiled by an assault on a member of the Kincasslagh Junior team while he was putting his heart·and soul into pulling the Burtonport Junior team. I hope Burtonport Rowing & Tog - o-War team, who have ~ good sportsmen among them dis-associate themselves from the "gentleman" who carried out· this vicious act by using his boot on a defenceless young aan. I must congratulate Mr. Joe Joyce, G.s. Dungloe and also a member of the Burtonport Team who .kept calm in the face of a lot of verbal abase following the incident. Mise le meas, Sports Fan. P.S. Incidentally, the Youth who vas assaulted, who is from Ardara, was named "Sports ·Personality of the Year" by the Donegal League Rowing Clubs. Anthony O'Donnell who is returning to Ibadon, West Africa. An old-time waltzing competition was held and the winners again were Mr. Connie Boyle, Neenmore and Mrs. Agnes Murray, Acres. I hear the Mayor has been offered a cast with the film series. Black Beauty on I.T.V. Councillor Pat the Cope wrote to the manager of the Lough Swilly about the Winter time-table. It seems you can enter Dungloe from Lunniagh, Foreland and Falcarrach but cannot get back he pointed out. Which is a ridiculous situation in this day and age and I think it's time some private Bus operator took over the service and looked after the public~ I hear Tady has got a new gardening job. The bad Summer left a quiet year for Tady with the bees. Margaret Murray or Manus McCole won't park beside J. R. on Burtonport Pier- but J. R.'s got a new mate, Taxi Driver Johnnie Hanlon.
