A Chara, Over the years we've seen maqy changes for the better in West Donegal, many - following letters to the Press. Bad as the present roads are, they used to be worse~ Long ago if onw was walking to Maghery strand and was passed by a motor-car, the pedestrian victim was enveloped in a cloud of brown sandy dust. At this stage the road was tarred only as far as Roshine School. Following a letter to the press, the late Cormac Jreslin T.D. and the late Pa 0 1 Donnell T.D. attended a meeting re having the road tarred as far as Maghery. After this was done a bus began operating between Haghery and Dungloe on Saturdays Sundays and Fair days. Following letters to the ' Press, a hospital was built in Dungloe, a seaweed factory was built in Meenmore, someone in Burtonport began rearing donkeys for export and an Annual Festival began in Dungloe. But at least one suggestion has never been taken up yet i.e. the manufacture of fire-lighters. They could be made from a mixture of granulated turf, some cement and some fat or oil. Phone BU.NBEG 90 A Chara, I think all this squabbling about Bands in the Rosses which appeared in this paper recently serves no purpose, and only stirs up hatred. What is necessary is for all Band committees to come together and form a Rosses Band Committee to get tQe best possible treatment for their Bands on the days of competitions. lveryone knows how badly organised some competition centres are, and if the Bands were united, they could dictate to organising committees instead of vice - versa . )If neart gan cur le chlfile. We haTe a very fine selection of Bands in the Rosses (and especially in the Anagaire parish) and I feel we should all ·vork· together, one for all and all for one. We can still go out and compete with one another, gi.e a beating and take a beating. But remember the old aayine, "united we stand, divided we fall n. Now I'm not complaining about dances in public houses; what I am against is the very high entrance fee being charged and I found a lot of people complaining but doing nothing about it. I was recently charged £2 which I found out later when I got hungry, did~ include a supper. One word sums it all up - ROBBERY. Come .on Publicans - ·bring down the entrance fee (the drink is. dear enough) or bring back the old sing-songs. A public house is no longer a "public" house ·when the public has to pay dearly to ented A Chara, Yours hope.t'ull7, John Deegan. ---- --- .....-.... 1/11/ 1 80, Tabufochas mor ag gabhail do Chumann Staire agus Seanc.hais Ghaoth Dobhair as an leabhar "Scathlan" a rinne siad a fhoils:l.u ar na mallaibh. la maith an rud an seanchas a choigilt.
